160th Anniversary Celebrations

The climax of the Celebrations of our history and continued witness as a Diocese and as the people of God in 2014 will be held in Grahamstown. The Celebratory Dinner has been moved to 2015 as part of the Diocesan Family Weekend. Here follows an article which was published in the Grocott’s Mail on Friday 14th November regarding this coming weekend’s events:

The Anglican Diocese of Grahamstown was founded just over 160 years ago, and to celebrate this special anniversary the leadership of the Diocese under Bishop Ebenezer Ntlali has planned a weekend of events. On Saturday 22 November at 10 am the Cathedral will be the venue for the first Bishop David Russell Memorial Lecture. David Russell, who died in August this year, was Bishop of Grahamstown from 1987 to 2003. First speaker in what is intended to be a series of annual lectures will be given by the outgoing Rector of the College of the Transfiguration, Prof Barney Pityana. After a light lunch (included in the day's modest ticket price of R50) there will be a presentation at 2 pm by Dr Chris Mann, Rhodes Honorary Professor of Poetry, and his artist wife Julia Skeen, on "The Blessed Company of all Faithful People". This will also take place in the Cathedral. Chris will focus on the ancient Christian doctrine of the Communion of the Saints, and link it to the indigenous Southern African belief in the continuing presence of the shades of the ancestors. Julia will explore Christian symbols in painting with particular reference to her recent work that includes icon-like symbols of Christ as the Vine.

On the Sunday morning, 23 November, Anglicans from all over the Diocese of Grahamstown are invited to join in a procession of witness which will begin at the Drostdy Arch at9 am, and proceed down High Street to the Cathedral. At the Eucharist service which will follow, the preacher will be Prof Barney Pityana.
